I've shown you throughout the Photoshop and ImageReady tutorials how to add effects to your layers to make up a Layer's Style, see the thread Layer Effects & Styles. But Photoshop also offers a cool collection of preset layer styles to choose from in the Styles palette.

Go to your Styles palette. If you don't see it go to Window in the menu bar and select it. If you don't see that many styles loaded click on the tiny arrow in the top right corner of your Styles palette. In the window that pops up you'll see a bunch of options as well as the sets of styles available to you listed at the bottom. Just click on a set and you'll be asked if you want to append or replace this new set with the set you currently have loaded.

There are a few ways you can apply the preset layer styles. Here I've used the type tool to make my name. First way to apply a style is simply to just click on one in the palette, red arrow. The style is applied to the active/highlighted layer in the layers palette. You can continue clicking on the different styles and watch them change in your file.

And here's my name with the style applied to it. You'll see in the layers palette all the effects that make up the style are listed and now are part of the WOODY layer. To make space in the layers palette, click the arrow next to the f on the layer and it will hide the effects. The effects are only hidden in the layers palette not in your file. Just click the arrow again to show them.

The second way to apply a preset style is to click and drag it from the styles palette over your file then release. If you hold down the shift key while clicking and dragging it will add the style to any existing effects on the destination layer instead of replacing them.

And lastly you can click and drag the style from the styles palette and release it over the layer.

Here I added a style to an empty layer. The effects are added to the layer but you don't see anything yet. Then I made a heart shaped selection.

I chose Edit>Fill... to fill the selection, and now you can see the style.

If after adding effects (Drop Shadow, Outer Glow, Bevel and Emboss etc.) to a layer you decide you'd like to save this layer style just click and drag the Effects layer, red arrow, and release it over an empty area in your Styles palette. You'll be asked to name the new style and then it will be added to your Styles palette.
