Another way you can save your files that have a transparent background is to save them as a png file. When you save as a PNG-24 it produces a larger file than a JPEG but can preserve up to 256 levels of transparency in an image. In Photoshop I chose Save For The Web... and then used these settings for the ladybug button below. Notice the matte setting is greyed out. When saving your files this way you don't have to worry about using your signature on multiple forums that have different background colors since you're not using a matte. You'll also notice the pixel quality is far better than a gif. Gifs can sometimes produce a weird clumpy look in the areas where gradation occurs in the image.
