I made a selection around the cookie and now I want to save it for later use.

From the menu bar choose Select>Save Selection... In the window name your selection then click OK.

You'll find your selection stored in the Channels palette.

To load the selection, in the Channels palette, click on your selection's channel. So for me that was cookie. You'll see that the other channels are no longer showing/highlighted. If you look at your file you'll see your selection is filled with white and the rest is black. Now click on the Load channel as selection button located at the bottom of the palette.

Finally click on the RGB channel at the very top of the palette. You'll notice your selection's channel is no longer highlighted when you do this. And you'll see your selection in your file.
