For examples of images in the posting windows see my themes , Acorn, Shock, Black Widow or Mulder and Scully.
Where you put your image(s) can be found by going to,
Admin > Themes > Advanced Styles & CSS > Pages > Threads (post lists) > Posts
Click on odd-numbered coloring for the first post and even-numbered coloring for the second post.
You're going to put the image's url into the background image field. To upload the image to the forum click the piece of paper with an orange arrow on the right side of the field.
If you click on the background repeat pulldown you can choose how the image will repeat. If you choose to not have the image repeat, if someone makes a post that exceeds the height of the image the image will not repeat but will center itself within the post. If you were to add a pattern in the window you could choose for it to repeat so the pattern would always fill up the window no matter how long a post may be.
If you click on the background position pulldown, this is where you choose where the image lines up within the post. Choosing center center for the image centers it within the window and remains centered if someone makes a post that exceeded the image's height.
You'll need to play around with the image's opacity in order for what people post to be seen over the image. You can also change the image's color so it matches the rest of the forum.
In order to make sure the image fits exactly into the posting window one option is take a screenshot of the posting window on your forum. Open the screenshot in Photoshop, or whatever program you're using, and use it as a guide. You would need to have the screenshot and your image in the same file. Make sure the image's layer is above the screenshot's and then lower the opacity of the image's layer. Now you can move, reduce / enlarge the image if needed.
