The brushes, gradients, swatches and your other presets that come with Photoshop will always be available to you as long as you don't delete them from your preset folder, which is something you should never do. But if you ever add to these sets with new custom shapes, brushes, gradients etc. that you've created or downloaded it's a good idea to save them as a new set. Once saved you can back them up by burning them onto a cd.

When saving your Brushes there are a few places where you can do that. With the brush tool as your selected tool from the toolbox you can go to the options bar and click in the box where it says Brush. In the window that appears click on the arrow in the top right corner, purple outline, and choose Save Brushes... Next you'll be able to name this new set and decide where it should be kept. It's easiest to put new sets in the preset folder with the brush sets you already have. After you save a new set and quit Photoshop the next time you open Photoshop your new set will appear in the bottom section of the window, red arrow. The sets in pink are the ones I've created.

You can also save a set by going to your brushes palette and clicking the arrow in the top right corner, red outline, and choosing Save Brushes... Again you'd name the new set and decide where it should be kept. After you save a new set and quit Photoshop the next time you open Photoshop your new set will appear in the bottom section of the window, red arrow.

If you choose Edit>Preset Manager... this is another place you can save your brushes but here it's done a little differently. When you click the arrow, red outline, you won't see Save Brushes...

You'll see Save Set... is also greyed out in the Preset Manager window. On a side note, if you click the pulldown where it says Preset Type at the top of the window you'll see you have access to all your other presets. Once you click on a brush it will get a thick border around it and the Save Set... option becomes available. To add brushes hold the shift key and click on them. Whatever brushes are selected are the ones that will be saved in the set. After you've selected the brushes you want in the set choose Save Set... When you name the set make sure you name it something other than what your currently loaded set is called.
