When you open Photoshop in order to begin a new project you'll need to make a new file. Go to the menu bar at the top and choose File>New... and this is what you'll see. The red section is where you name your file. The blue sections are where you fill in the dimensions of your file. And the green section is where you choose whether you start with a transparent layer or a file that has a Background.

The Width and Height fields is where you fill in the dimensions for your new file. If you click on the arrows in their pulldown menus, red sections, a window will pop up that lists the types of measurements you can choose from. The other way to choose the size of your new file is to go to the Preset Sizes section. If you click on the arrows in the pulldown menu where it says Custom, red section, another window will pop up that lists a variety of sizes you can choose from. Once you click on a size the dimensions will automatically be entered into the Width and Height fields.

In the Contents section you have three choices. Selecting White will give you a new file filled with white. And in the Layers palette it will say Background. Selecting Background Color will give you a new file filled with whatever the background color is in the toolbox, red outline. And again in the Layers palette it will say Background. Selecting Transparent will give you a new file without a color. And in the Layers palette it will say Layer 1.

New File Exercise
Make two new files.
Even though resolution and mode weren't covered in this section I'd still like you to enter the amounts listed below in their fields.
1). First new file should be,
Name: signature Dimension: 5" x 2" Resolution: 100 Mode: RGB Color Contents: Transparent
2). Second new file should be,
Name: avatar Dimension: 1" x 1" Resolution: 100 Mode: RGB Color Contents: White
3). Close each of these files, without saving, by clicking on the red button in the top left corner of each file.
