The first example shows how to make the selection for a frame using the Rectangular and Elliptical Marquee tool. Example 2 shows how to make a frame by contracting the initial selection. EXAMPLE 1Make your first selection. If you want to make a perfect square or circle hold the shift key while you click and drag. To make the inner selection, or subtract from the first one, hold the option key for Macs and the alt key for Windows then click and drag inside the first selection. Your cursor will change to a plus and minus sign when you hold the appropriate key. If you want the inner selection to be a perfect square or circle, after you start to drag you can release the appropriate key and then hold the shift key. To move the inner selection while you're making it hold the space bar. If you're constraining your inner selection by holding the shift key to make a perfect square or circle you would hold the space bar in addition to the shift key when moving the selection.

EXAMPLE 2Make your selection and fill it with a color. Don't deselect. Choose Select>Modify>Contract... For this example I chose 20. Click OK and then delete. Now deselect and you have a frame.
