In Photoshop if I want to save my siggy as a gif, from the menu bar I choose Save For The Web... and use these settings... Your color table will change depending on what colors are used in the file you're saving. Matte is set to white in this picture. If whatever you're saving has a transparent background the matte's color will appear around any transparent edges your graphic might have. It will be very noticeable around drop shadows. If you want the matte to blend in set its color to the same color of the forum/website where the graphic will appear. Setting the matte to none will replace any transparent edges with black and can cause some graphics to have a choppy outline. To save a file that has a transparent background without having to worry about the color of the matte, save it in Photoshop as a PNG-24. This is for files that don't have any animation. Check out the thread Transparent Background Without A Matte.

When working in ImageReady these are the settings I use... If you don't see this palette go to Window from the menu bar and choose it. If you don't see all of these options in your palette click on the tiny arrow in the top right corner of the palette and choose show options. Matte is set to white in this picture. If whatever you're saving has a transparent background the matte's color will appear around any transparent edges your graphic might have. It will be very noticeable around drop shadows. If you want the matte to blend in set its color to the same color of the forum/website where the graphic will appear.
