In the toolbox is where you'll find your foreground and background colors. The default foreground and background colors are black and white. If you ever want to switch back to the default colors click on the default icon, green section. If you ever want to switch positions of the foreground and background colors click the switch icon, purple section. One way to set a color as either your foreground or background color is to click on their box in the toolbox, red arrows. When you click on either the foreground or background colors' box the Color Picker window below will pop up. You have a number of options when choosing a new color using the Color Picker window. One is if you know your color's values you can enter them in the red fields. Two examples of this would be to enter (R: 0 G: 0 B: 128) in the RGB fields to make the color Navy. Another would be to enter an HTML Color Code in the # field. Once you enter the appropriate values or code click OK.

Another way you can choose a color is to drag the tiny ring, white arrow, and/or the tiny triangles, blue arrow. As you drag the tiny ring and/or triangles your new color will appear in the top box and your old color in the bottom box. To return to the old color just click in the bottom box. When you have the color you want click OK.

With the Color Picker window open you can also go to any open file and click down anywhere in the file to choose a color. In the picture below I clicked where the yellow dot is. You can see the color was automatically put in the Color Picker's top box, red arrow. If you pick your color this way click OK when done. You can also click down in a file to choose a color without having the Color Picker window open. Just select the eyedropper tool from the toolbox first and then click down in your file.

The other way to set a color as either your foreground or background color without using the Color Picker window is to go to your Swatches palette and click on a swatch. Clicking on a swatch will automatically put it in the foreground color's box in the toolbox.

Foreground & Background Colors Exercise
1). Go to your toolbox and click on the foreground color's box.
2). In the Color Picker window enter (R: 255 G: 165 B: 0) in the RGB fields then click OK. Your foreground color in the toolbox should be orange.
3). Go to your toolbox and click on the foreground color's box. In the Color Picker window drag the tiny ring and triangles to make a new color. Click OK when done.
4). Now click the switch icon in your toolbox so your foreground color is now your background color.
5). Go to your swatches palette and click on any color.
6). Finally click on the default icon in your toolbox so your foreground and background colors are black and white.
