Layers

This is a basic way to explain layers. Imagine a layer is a transparent piece of glass that you can put whatever you want on it. You could draw on it, have type, a photo, a gradient etc. And each piece of glass you have is stacked on top of one another. In the first picture you see a house with a sun. You might think these items are all on one layer but if you look at the last picture you'll see that each shape is actually on its own layer. You can also see this in the layers palette that I highlighted in red. You could put all of these shapes on one layer if you wanted. The advantages of using multiple layers is you're able to make certain changes to what's on one layer without changing all the other layers. Layer order or how they're "stacked" in the layers palette as well as the placement of things on a layer can determine whether or not everything on a layer is visible. To add a new layer you click on the New Layer button at the bottom of the layers palette, red outline.
