Throughout the tutorials I've told you to hold the shift key while you click and drag the rectangular and elliptical marquee tools as well as the custom shape tool to make a selection/shape that's in proportion. Well you can also set each tool so you never have to hold the shift key. I used the elliptical marquee tool as the example below but this also works with the rectangular marquee tool. If you select the elliptical marquee tool and set it to Normal in the options bar where it says Style you won't be constricted when you click and drag. This is the setting we have been using in the tutorials where I have said to hold the shift key while you drag. If you choose Fixed Aspect Ratio you will always make perfect circles with the elliptical marquee tool. If you choose Fixed Size you can fill in amounts in the two fields to always make the same size selection.

For the custom shape tool you would click the blue arrow in the options bar, see red outline, and choose Defined Proportions. This setting will keep any custom shape you choose in proportion. And now when you click and drag you'll make perfect circles.
