Here's how you make a selection of what's on a layer. If there aren't any transparent areas the entire layer will be selected. In the layers palette hold your cursor over the layer that you want to make a selection. You should see a pointing hand. For a Mac hold the command key. For Windows hold the control key. Your cursor turns into a pointing hand with a dotted line box. Click one time in the layer where the red arrow is pointing. In Photoshop CS3 (10) you need to click inside the layer's thumbnail, purple arrow. Now the layer has been made a selection. The other way to select what's on a layer is to first click on the layer that you want to make a selection. When loading a selection this way the layer you want to make a selection has to be the active layer. Now in the menu bar choose Select>Load Selection... In the dialog box that pops up your layer's name will appear in the pink section. Since I didn't name my layer that's why it says Layer 1. Click OK and your layer will be a selection.

Once you have one layer selected you can add to this selection if you choose. I've selected the red square. To add to the selection, while holding the Command key/Mac or Control key/Windows add the shift key. You'll see a plus sign gets added inside the dotted line box of your cursor. I then clicked one time on the purple circle layer where the red arrow is pointing. If I was using CS3 I would have clicked in the thumbnail. Then I clicked one time on the blue diamond layer where the red arrow is pointing. If I was using CS3 I would have clicked in the thumbnail. Now I have a selection that includes all three shapes. The red square's layer was the active layer the entire time.
