A quick and easy way to remove the background from your photos/cut an image out is to use the Lasso Tool.

With the lasso tool you're going to trace around the edge of the object you want to remove, my Chihuahua in his bed, to make a selection around the object. If for some reason you stop as you're going around you'll see your selection is no longer just around the edge of your object. To continue or " add to the selection" hold down the shift key. When you do you'll see a plus sign is added to the lasso's cursor. While holding the shift key click within the selection and continue tracing around the edge of your object.

In newer versions of Photoshop you'll notice the Refine Edge... button appears in the option bar whenever you make a selection with any of the selection tools.

In the Refine Edge window you'll see you can change the Smooth and Feather settings as well as a couple more in one location. As you make the adjustments in the window they'll appear in your file. You're also able to see how your selection looks in a variety of previews. Simply click on the icons to see your choices, red arrow.
