A quick and easy way to remove the background from your photos/cut an image out is to use the Lasso Tool. ![](http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p177/smileys_2007/Tutorials/l1-2.jpg) ![](http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p177/smileys_2007/Tutorials/l6.jpg)

With the lasso tool you're going to trace around the edge of the object you want to remove, my Chihuahua in his bed, to make a selection around the object. If for some reason you stop as you're going around you'll see your selection is no longer just around the edge of your object. ![](http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p177/smileys_2007/Tutorials/l3-1.jpg) To continue or " add to the selection" hold down the shift key. When you do you'll see a plus sign is added to the lasso's cursor. While holding the shift key click within the selection and continue tracing around the edge of your object. ![](http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p177/smileys_2007/Tutorials/l4-1.jpg)

In the menu bar choose Select>Modify>Smooth...>1. For a softer edge now choose Select>Modify>Feather>1. Go back to the menu bar and select Layer>New>Layer via copy. Your selection will shut off and you'll have one of the following... Smooth ![](http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p177/smileys_2007/Tutorials/l6.jpg) Smooth & feathered ![](http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p177/smileys_2007/Tutorials/l5-1.jpg)

In newer versions of Photoshop you'll notice the Refine Edge... button appears in the option bar whenever you make a selection with any of the selection tools. ![](http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p177/smileys_2007/Tutorials/l4-1.jpg) ![](http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p177/smileys_2007/Tutorials/l7-1.jpg)

In the Refine Edge window you'll see you can change the Smooth and Feather settings as well as a couple more in one location. As you make the adjustments in the window they'll appear in your file. You're also able to see how your selection looks in a variety of previews. Simply click on the icons to see your choices, red arrow. ![](http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p177/smileys_2007/Tutorials/l8-1.jpg)
