Start with a new file 5" x 2" at 100 ppi with a transparent background. Open your picture file and while holding the shift key click and drag the Background from the layers palette over your siggy file then release. You hold the shift key to keep the layer centered. Reduce or enlarge your picture. Take your brush tool and set the Mode to Color in the options bar then paint over your picture. This is the color I used. To get this color go to the toolbox and click in the foreground color's box. In the Color Picker window enter the settings I added a red outline to and click OK.

Name this layer back pic. Apply Filter>Sharpen>Sharpen to the back pic layer.

I applied Filter>Sharpen>Sharpen three more times but it's your choice if you want to apply it more or less. You'll see some blue areas appeared in my picture. If this happens take your brush tool and using the same color you used to color your picture brush over it again.

Click and drag the lower right corner of your file to extend the window, you will see a grey border like in the picture. Take your pencil tool and select the one pixel brush from your brushes palette. Make a new layer then make white your foreground color. Click in the grey area on the left side of your siggy and while holding the shift key drag across your siggy to the right side's grey area then release. You should have a thin line.

Use the move tool to position the line at the top. Make a copy of this layer by clicking and dragging it to the new layer icon. Drag this line down. Make a copy of this layer and choose Edit>Transform>Rotate 90˚ CW. Drag this line to the left. And finally make a copy of that layer and drag the line to the right.

Once all your lines are in place link and merge their layers. Name this layer trim. Take your crop tool and drag it around your entire siggy and apply it.

Open your second picture's file and drag it into your siggy. Reduce or enlarge your picture. Since you are only going to be using a square section from your picture you need to take the rectangular marquee tool and make a selection. To make a perfect square hold the shift key while clicking and dragging. If you aren't happy with the size or shape just click outside the selection and start again. Once your selection is made you can move it where you want by clicking inside the selection and dragging it. With your selection over the part of your picture you want to use click on the second picture's layer and choose Layer>New>Layer via Copy. Deselect and name the new layer square pic. Throw away the second picture's original layer.

Click on the square pic layer and click the lock I added a pink outline to in the layers palette. With your brush tool using the same color you used to color your back picture paint over your square picture. Take your eyedropper tool, blue outline, and click in either a dark or light area of your picture. Now with your type tool write your name. For my two names I sampled a dark color for one name and a light color for the other name. If you ever want to change the color of a type layer first select the type tool and then click on the layer you want to change. Now click in the colored box in the options bar. When the Color Picker window pops up you can either get your color there, go to your swatches palette or sample a color from a file.
