To make objects "float" you just need to add a drop shadow to them. There are a few different ways you can save objects that are floating.
If you save them as a jpg your objects will have a background. If you don't mind that your background will be seen on the forum/website you'll be using it on choose whatever color you want. But if you want whatever is floating to appear as if it's floating with a transparent background you need to make the background's color the same as the forum/website you'll be using it on. To do this take a screenshot of the forum/website and then open it in Photoshop. Now select the eyedropper tool and sample the color by clicking down on it in your file. Add a layer to your siggy's file and fill it with this color.
To save it with a transparent background save it as a gif or PNG-24. When saving as a gif set the matte's color to that of the forum/website you'll be using it on. Take a screenshot like above to find the correct color. When saving them as a PNG-24 you don't have to worry about the matte's color because you don't use one.
You can check out the different settings in the thread My Settings.
This was saved as a PNG-24. This keeps the transparent background without adding a matte.
This one was saved as a jpg with a white background.
This one was saved as a gif with the matte set to white. I set the matte to white so you could see it added to the transparent areas. Normally you would set the matte to the color of the forum you will be using it on.
And this one was saved as a gif with none as the matte. You can see the transparent areas were replaced with black.
