Here's the button we'll be making. You can change any of the colors.

Start with a new file. Fill Layer 1 with white. Name this layer back color.

Apply these two effects to the button layer. To change the color used for an effect click on the color box in the Layer Style window. Here's how your button should look.

Add a new layer and name it shine. Place this layer above your button layer in the layers palette. Select the rounded rectangle tool. And use these settings in the options bar. Click and drag to make a work path where you want the button's shine to be.

Go to your paths palette and click the Load path as a selection button. When you do your path will shut off in the palette... ...and the path in your file will be a selection.

Select the gradient tool. In the options bar click the gradient showing. From the window that pops up choose the Black, White gradient.

Go to your file and while holding the shift key click at the bottom of the selection and drag to the top then release. Deselect. Set the blending mode for the shine layer to screen. If the shine is too bright adjust the opacity. I set mine to 80%. Here's how your button should look.

With the type tool add your text. I used a pixel font. You can find a nice selection at dafont.comPlace the text layer under the shine layer and apply these two effects to the text layer. To change the color used for an effect click on the color box in the Layer Style window. To change a Contour click the arrow to the right of the contour showing in the Layer Style window. To see the name of a contour let your cursor hover over it.
